Imagine a gentle activity that reduces the risk of injury to your joints, boosts your immune system and improves co-ordination. Without you even realizing you’re doing it, Nordic Walking uses 90% of the muscles in your body while taking the strain from feet and legs and using important core muscles as well as arms and shoulders to assist in moving the body forward.
Nordic Walking began as a summer training exercise for serious cross-country skiers but has now been adopted by a huge number of people as a way to lose weight, lower cholesterol, improve heart health or recover from injuries or operations. For many people it can simply be a fun, sociable way to enjoy discovering new places to walk Nordic Walking can achieve this by using the natural arm swinging motion of walking along with specially designed poles to subtly activate muscles throughout the body. With proper technique, people with limited time to introduce physical activity into their lives get far more benefit than from an equivalent walk without using poles.
As well as needing a pair of appropriately designed poles, good technique is essential to gaining the full advantage of the activity and avoiding the risk of injury. Unlike trekking or ski poles, Nordic Walking poles have features to allow pressure on the poles to be transferred into both reducing load on the lower limbs and assisting in forward motion. The poles have specially designed wrist harnesses that remove the need to grip the poles tightly and have replaceable tips for walking both on and off pavement.
At Outsider, the Outdoors Store in the heart of Qualicum Beach we run regular Nordic Walking classes throughout the year. We also include free Nordic Walking tuition with the purchase of any set of Nordic poles and are happy provide demo poles for anyone who'd like to "try before they buy". This is the only way that we can be sure that our customers will get full benefit from their purchase. As trainers and outdoor enthusiasts we take a real pride in encouraging people to enjoy this wonderful activity. Classes are held in pleasant outdoor environments and are suitable for all ages from youth up. All fitness levels are catered for.
We are happy to tailor tuition to those recovering from illness or injury and will happily assist our older customers to benefit from the additional stability and co-ordination that comes with this healthy, low stress physical activity.
